kilativ — 17.05.2020 On Friday, May 15th, Moscow became the first city anywhere in the world to introduce a free and large-scale coronavirus screening program to test the population for antibodies.
The city, which has over half of Russia’s confirmed cases, will offer the tests at 30 clinics and have the capacity to perform 200,000 tests a day by the end of the month.
Antibody tests can show who has already had the virus and may have a degree of immunity, meaning those people can potentially resume social contact with others.
As the program is rolled out, every few days a random selection of 70,000 Moscow residents will receive email or text invites to get tested for COVID-19 antibodies.
Testing will be carried out using the enzyme immunoassay method that detects IgM antibodies, a marker of coronavirus infection, and immunoglobulin G, a marker of immunity to the infection.
Weekly data will be published online and will be used to make "executive decisions" as to whether to ease or tighten restrictions in a city which has been under quarantine restrictions for two months.
