Казнь эсэсовцев
foto_history — 12.08.2014 The last photograph of Paul Maitla (in the first photograph, second from left) together with 4 other Estonian soldiers. Then the shots of red Czechs ended their lives. The fate of Paul Maitla was uncertain for number of decades, until some information was discovered in 2005 in the city archives of the Czech town of Nymburk. He was murdered together with 4 other Estonian soldiers on 10 May 1945 near Nymburk. The 20. Waffen Grenadier Division der SS (estnische Nr 1) was north of Prague when the war ended and, rather than formally surrender, its officers and men were split themselves up into small groups and headed for the American lines. A few made it, but most were trapped by Soviet patrols or killed by Czech partisans. Most of those to fall into the hands of the Red Army were put to death. Some of the Estonians who surrendered to the western allies were handed back to the Soviets.
