His skin was already blue-ish gray.
His limbs were splayed out in inhuman directions. Blood flowed from his face.
Placing the back of my palms on his chest, I felt for rise and fall – he’s not breathing. His skin color reflected that awful fact.
A silent, distraught friend kneeled nearby, holding the man’s head and neck in place.
Life can end in an instant. With no tools, no medical equipment, and no ambulance nearby, there was nothing I could do. The man died shortly after.

There was nothing I could do about this single Ukrainian man’s passing, but there remains quite a lot that the United States can do to reduce the number of Ukrainian deaths over the next year.
The terrible thing is that very few lawmakers oppose aid for Ukraine...
et despite overwhelming support in both parties and both houses of Congress, American funding will likely lapse at the end of the year – because they’re debating a topic wholly unrelated to Ukraine: American border policy.
