[10.06.08] Shin Hyesung, “The members gave me great strength when I was having a hard time”
Singer Shin Hyesung, who had been involved in a gambling incident at the end of last year, has expressed his gratitude to his fellow Shinhwa members for supporting him during those difficult times.
At the pre-concert press conference held on 7th June held at the Tokyo International Forum, he talked about the strong friendship among the Shinhwa members.
“Lately I’ve been meeting and talking on the phone with the members very often. After the incident, maybe they knew that it was a big deal, so they often got in touch with me.”
“We didn’t talk about anything serious, we just chatted and joked, and they often came to my place without even calling first. Because of them I felt a great amount of strength.”
“When we get busy with our individual activities everyone doesn’t get in touch with each other that often. Occasionally I’d feel a little distant from the members. But after what happened last year, looking at my case, I felt, ‘I only have the members after all’. They are a great source of strength for me.”
Shin Hyesung expressed his anticipation of the day when they’re able to stand on stage once again as Shinhwa.
“We’d talk about this everytime we meet. I really want the members to quickly get back and reunite, and bring new music to everyone. When the members have completed their military service, the 6 of us will sing on stage together. Just thinking about it makes me very excited, I’m really looking forward to it.”
Shin Hyesung also shared his feelings about standing on stage after 1 year. “During this whole time I really wanted to sing. My tears flowed while singing at the concert. Looking at the happy expressions of the faces of the fans, I really felt that singing is a really blissful thing to me.”
He promised, “Even if I have to give everything, I will bring
all of you good music and not disappoint you.”

Q: How have you been?
A: Since the incident last year, I’m talking about it for the first time. I’ve committed a really stupid mistake, I’ve disappointed and hurt the people who have cared for me and believed in me for a long time. I am sorry. I’ve been reflecting on my actions all this while, and this period of time has been difficult for me. I really regret it, and I’ve been doing a lot of self-reflection, I will not commit such a mistake again. Once again I apologize for disappointing everyone.
Q: After the gambling incident took place, what were your thoughts?
A: It was very difficult. I had disappointed the people who trusted me, including the fans, my family, my friends, my seniors, my juniors, my peers. I was troubled over whether I could continue as a singer. In the end I decided that I have to return to my original place, bring good music to repay everyone.
Q: You released your Japanese album without first issuing an official apology. Please elaborate on this.
A: Everyone knew about this through the news articles. But before the incident happened we had already been working on the Japanese album. I too felt that I was a thoughtless fool and of course I had to take some time to reflect on myself. So I pushed the comeback date as far back as possible. I don’t want to make any excuses but I’ve put a lot of work on hold. This concert was actually planned to take place last year.
Q: What resolutions do you have now that you’ve restarted your activities?
A: I’ve encountered all kinds of situations in my 12 years as a singer, but this time round it was the most difficult and stressful for me. I’ve thought about a lot during my time off, but I didn’t get any answers. After sorting myself out I gathered my courage to stand on stage once again.
Q: There are many fans who are waiting for Shinhwa. What are the plans for Shinhwa’s activities?
A: It’s Shinhwa’s 12th year since our debut, and we’re still together. This year we’ve been in touch with one another a lot more. The members are all serving their military duties so we can’t go on with our activities right away. But whenever we meet we always decide that ‘the 6 of us must reunite and stand on stage again’. When we get to that time, everyone will see the 6 of us on stage. Just thinking about this makes me excited with anticipation.
Q: What is the secret to Shinhwa being able to go on for 12 years?
A: I’ve seen many groups who gained popularity after their debut but went on to face disbandment crises. It’s such a pity whenever that happens. In Shinhwa’s case, 6 guys spending 12 years together, it’s impossible not to have problems. It’s just that when that happens, we don’t keep things to ourselves and we talk it out. Although at that moment feelings might get hurt, but as long as problems can be resolved it will never be the end of the road.
Q: Were the Shinhwa members a consolation to you after the gambling incident?
A: The members knew that I was having a tough time and often got in touch with me, and would come to my place without telling me in advance. I thought, ‘I only have the members after all’.
Q: What about activities for S, your group with Kangta and Lee Ji Hoon?
A: This group was formed for good friends who want to make the music they like, and due to our individual activities, the group hasn’t been able to be active. Kangta has recently been discharged from the army, and we’ve talked a lot about this. When there’s an opportunity, the group will still appear.
Q: Plans for activities in Korea?
A: There are plans to come back with a full album this autumn, and I’d like to go on an Asian tour after that. I’ll be having promotional activities and fanmeetings in Shanghai, Taiwan and Thailand. Please look forward to it.
